Frontier Airlines Policy

A respiratory device is considered an assistive device and may be carried on the aircraft or checked without charge. A respiratory device may be carried onboard for use in the cabin or transported as checked baggage.

Most CPAP machines are FAA-approved. However, it's important that you have a note from your doctor about the need to use it during the flight. Let the aircrew know, before the flight that you need to use your CPAP machine during the trip.

No, a CPAP machine cannot be counted as a carry-on. Because of its status as a medical device, domestic flights (in the U.S.) are not legally allowed to count your CPAP machine against your carry-on bag total, and you're encouraged to board with your device rather than check it in with your luggage.

Nebulizers, CPAPs, BiPAPs and APAPs are allowed in carry-on bags but must be removed from the carrying case and undergo X-ray screening. Facemasks and tubing may remain in the case. You may provide a clear plastic bag to place the device in for X-ray screening.

At least two weeks before you fly, ask the airline for permission to use your device on a flight. If they give permission in writing, remember to take a copy of the letter/email with you.

You're Allowed to Pack Up to 3.4 Ounces of Distilled Water. Keeping a small amount of distilled water in your carry-on bag will be a big help if you need to use your CPAP in-flight, or soon after landing. You're allowed to pack more than that in your checked luggage, too.

Bring Your Own Pillow

Bringing your own pillow can ensure that you can comfortably sleep in a position that helps you control your sleep apnea symptoms. If your luggage doesn't have room for your regular pillow, you might be able to pack a small travel pillow instead.

Things to do when you fly

Bring your CPAP machine in its case as carry-on. Prepare to show appropriate documentation (pack with your machine). Turn humidifier off, and turn on airplane mode (if your CPAP machine has it).

You can use bottled water in your CPAP humidifier if it is distilled water. Most bottled water used for drinking is purified or spring water. These don't contain bacteria, but they may have minerals like calcium and magnesium that can leave residue in your humidifier and may cause it to wear out quicker than expected.

Measurements for a personal item on Frontier are 8"x18"x14". Collectively, this is only 10 inches less than the maximum measurements for a carry-on bag. Frontier suggests that personal items are typically small purses or neck pillows, but I knew that I could make my personal item function as my carry on.
